Copper History and Uses: 

In Greece, copper was known by the name chalkos and in Roman times, it was known as Cyprium, named after Cyprus, where much of the copper was mined. It was then simplified to the Latin cuprum and in English copper.  In ancient times it was polished to make mirrors and was associated with the goddess of Love, Aphrodite, and the planet Venus.  Copper lumps were used as money by the Romans in the 6th through to 3rd centuries BC. Native copper has been used since 9000 BC in the Middle East, a copper pendant was found in northern Iraq from 8700 BC. Copper smelting was most likely invented independently in several different places at different times throughout history. In ancient India, it was used as a surgical instrument and Egyptians used it to purify water and sterilize wounds. It was used in China, the UK, and North America, and in South America, it was used to make burial ornaments. Copper compounds are commonly found as copper salts, which give blue or green colors to minerals such as Azurite and Turquoise and have been widely used historically as pigments. In modern times because of its conductivity – both electrical and thermal, it is used in cables, wires, and pipes.  Its metaphysical uses are in conjunction with healing crystals, to make wands and other powerful healing tools because of its capacity to amplify and direct energy.
