Opal derives its name from the Latin opalus and Sanskrit upala meaning precious stone. There are three different types of Opal defined as Precious/Rainbow Opals – rarest displaying flashes of iridescent color, Common/Potch Opals – found in many places displays opalescent pearly luster and Fire Opals – mostly found in Mexico translucent red or orange sometimes with flashes of green. Opal is the national gemstone of Australia which produces 97% of the world’s supply. Opal was revered in ancient times as a gemstone of good luck and happiness because it was thought that in its multitude of colors it carried the properties of many other precious stones. Called the “eye stone” by the ancient Romans they believed it had the power to heal eye diseases, a belief which was held into the Middle Ages when it was still called ophthalmos or ophthalmius.
