Chrysoprase History and Uses:
Chrysoprase, also called chrysophrase, chrysoprasus or the stone of Venus, is named from the Greek ‘chrusos’ meaning gold and ‘prason’ meaning leek in reference to its color. It has been known since ancient times and was a favorite stone of Alexander the Great who attributed his success in battles to the Chrysoprase beaded girdle he wore. The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians used it to make seals, signets, jewelry, and other ornamental objects because of its beautiful apple green color. In Medieval Europe, it was worn to attract money and ward off nightmares. Legend has it that thieves would use Chrysoprase to make themselves invisible.
Chrysoprase Geological Description:
Chrysoprase is a rare form of green chalcedony, a member of the quartz group with a hardness of 7. This stone’s green color is due to its nickel content. Chrysoprase is found in Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, and Russia.
