Although often referred to as sea lilies, Crinoids are actually true animals. Their bodies rest within a cup-shaped skeleton made of interlocking calcium carbonate plates, and they used tubes on their arms to feed on suspended food in the water. Nearly extinct, these creatures still fascinate fossil enthusiasts!
A plethora of Crinoids once thrived in and around Oklahoma, with many fossils sold in trade originating from that region.
The most ancient crinoids can be found in rocks from the Cambrian era. They were prevalent during the Paleozoic Era, but seem to have disappeared in later periods - possibly due to an increase in marine predators. Today, they are not commonly found in our oceans.
