Zeolite History and Uses:
Zeolite Geological Description:
The Zeolites group combines rarity, beauty, complexity, and unique crystal habits. They typically form in the cavities (or vesicles) of volcanic rocks. Zeolites are the result of very low-grade metamorphism. The zeolite group is very diverse in its crystal habit. There are about 45 natural minerals that are recognized members of the Zeolite Group, and they often occur with other crystals in a matrix form. They include Apophyllite, Heulandite, Prehnite, and Stilbite.
Collecting zeolites can be very enjoyable and fulfilling. Most Zeolites are sold as specimens rather than cut or tumbled crystals because the beauty of the original crystal stone is lost with processing.
Zeolites are typically soft to moderately hard, light in density, transparent to translucent, and have similar origins. Zeolites occur in a variety of colors. Stilbite is a zeolite mineral, a sodium calcium hydrous aluminum silicate with a hardness of 3.5 – 4. It forms in cavities in lava and is often found with Heulandite and Apophyllite. It is found in Poona, India, Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, and Scotland.
